Wagon 2 is the primary piece of apparatus used by
the career staff from Vinton Fire and EMS and
Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department. It
responds to all fires, alarms, motor vehicle accidents, and EMS assists
during the daylight hours (6a-6p), Monday through
Friday. This piece of apparatus also serves as a
back up to Engine 2.
Nationwide, most departments use the term 'Engine' to describe
their pumpers. The term 'Wagon' is a reference to Hose Wagon,
which was used in the early days of firefighting. This was often
a cart pulled by horses to fires. Today, some departments use
the term 'Wagon' as a reference to the old hose wagons. Most of
our wagons today function the same as pumpers that are termed
engine. Wagon 2 and Engine 2 carry the same amount of hose and
water and are configured to closely match each other.
