Working Fire on West
Cleveland
by Assistant Chief Chris Heptinstall
8/14/2011 Shortly before 1:00pm Companies 2 and
6, Ladder 2, Medic 2, Battalion 1, and EMS 2 were dispatched to
the 400 block of West Cleveland Ave for a residential structure
fire. Engine 2 was out the door moments after dispatch with a
crew of 5. Assistant Chief 2 (Heptinstall) arrived on scene and
reported a single story residential structure with heavy smoke
showing from the Alpha side. AC 2 established Cleveland Ave
command and marked the incident a working fire. The sole
occupant was able to evacuate and did not sustain injury. Engine
2 laid in from a hydrant at 4th St and Cleveland for
approximately 300 feet. Engine 2's crew stretched a 1-3/4"
handline. While Engine 2's crew was preparing to make entry, the
fire reached flashover stage resulting in heavy fire on the
Alpha side. Engine 2's crew made a quick knock down and made
entry. With the fire quickly knocked down, ceiling was pulled to
check for extension. As other crews arrived, it was found that
there was no extension to the attic. The fire was held to the 2
front rooms of the structure. Crews remained on scene for 2 1/2
hours before clearing and returning to service. Units responding
